Mormons, why were Native Americans so susceptible to disease if...?

Did those domesticated animals of the Jaredites ever mingle with the contaminated animal in Europe and Asia? If not, how were they exposed to the virus found in another continent? Perhaps it could be in part explained that they Book of Mormon peoples too had a dietary law. Like in the Law of Moses with clean and unclean animals.
