Broken Fridge! What should I do?
You have punctured the sealed system and let out all the refrigerant. This is an expensive repair, so much so that a new one is more logical than to repair this one. By itself the gas is odorless. The smell is from the oil and heated compressor core fumes that are flushed out with the refrigerant. The gas is not toxic unless you were in a very small space like the refrigerator itself and sealed in. It would displace the oxygen. If food is in a sealed container its probably OK. But if it smells like what you smelled throw it out. I know that smell and it can be very bad. But with a good airing of the house it will clear things up quickly. Good Luck
