Networking question - does anyone know what Trellis encoding is?

It's a compression thing. I'm unsure precisely at what level to pitch the answer since an explanation really needs an in depth knowledge of Fourier ysis. Trellis encoding allows you to re-express the results of a transform in fewer coefficients which means less data to be transmitted. The process is a lossy one but gives acceptable results in practice.
