Can you use oil pastel on a canvas?

it can be done right? i have pentel oil pastels and i wanna do something on a canvas. im going to hang it in my room. will it smudge? what can i do to keep it from getting damaged or smudged. this is what im doing... a href="http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z48/omgitsmel91/vermouthmartini.jpg" rel="nofollow"http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z48/o…/a i feel like pastels would be the most successful way to do it but im kinda new to pastels and i dont know if it can be used on canvas.
